This is a great unit with a four part 2,000 slide
interactive approach to PowerPoint that covers
science topics associated with weathering,
soil, particle size, soil conservation, ice ages,
glaciers, glacial landforms, and much more.
This unit is full of great hands-on activities
that will have your students getting their
hands dirty. The ice ages and glaciers section
is fantastic, especially if you teach in an area
shaped by the last ice age.  Molding glacial
landforms onto a clay mountain is one of my
favorites. Other highlights include the
chemical weathering lab, Alka-Seltzer and
surface area, Design a farm / Soil
Conservation Project and more.
Teaching Duration = 5 Weeks
Areas of Focus within The Weathering, Soil Science, Soil Conservation, Ice Ages, and Glaciers Unit: Importance of Soil,
Weathering, Types of Mechanical Weathering, Types of Chemical Weathering, Surface Area and Weathering, Mass
Movement of Earthen Materials, Soil, Soil Color, Particle Size, Soil Porosity and Permeability, Soil Horizons, Soil Conservation,
Topographic Maps, The Dust Bowl, Erosion, Deposition, Soil Conservation Measures, Glaciers, Types of Glaciers, Ice Ages,
Causes of Ice Ages, Milankovitch Cycles, Paleoecology, Glacial Landforms. Difficulty rating 6/10
.
The Weathering, Soil Science, Soil Conservation, Ice Ages, and Glaciers Unit includes a four part interactive and engaging
PowerPoint Presentation of 2,000+ slides with built-in class notes (Red Slides), lab activities, project ideas, discussion
questions, assessments (Quiz Wiz), challenge questions with answers, videos, and much more. Text is displayed in large
print (32 font) and is placed at the top of each slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom.  A shade technique
and color coded text helps to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson.  The entire
unit except for the videos can be edited to fit any curriculum or time requirement.  Also included is a 12 page assessment
that chronologically follows the slideshow for nightly homework, as well as a 9 page modified assessment. 18 pages of
class notes with images are also included for students who require assistance, as well as answer keys to both of the
assessments for support professionals, teachers, and homeschool parents. Several video links are provided and a slide
within the slideshow cues teacher / parent when the videos are most relevant to play. Video shorts usually range from 2-7
minutes. Two PowerPoint review games are included (110+ slides each). Answers to the PowerPoint review games are
provided in PowerPoint form so students can self-assess. Lastly, several class games such as guess the hidden picture
beneath the boxes, crosswords, and the find the hidden owl somewhere within the slideshow are provided.
Difficulty rating 6/10.
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

HS.ESS3.2 (Evaluate competing design solutions for developing,
managing, and utilizing energy and mineral resources based on
cost benefit ratios).
•        Emphasis is placed on conservation of soil.  Ways to
reduce erosion and increase soil fertility.

HS.ESS3.1 (Construct an explanation based on evidence for how
the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural
hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity).
•        Emphasis in this unit is placed on mass movement of
earthen materials, erosion, the Dust Bowl and soil conservation.
Below are just a few of the typical standards that this unit addresses for those that are interested.  This unit does cover many topics / standards that are not addressed
below.

●Keep a journal record of observations, recognizing patterns, summarizing findings, and reflecting on the observations.
●Explain that large rocks can be broken down into smaller rocks.
●Explain that smaller rocks come from the breaking and weathering of larger rocks and bedrock.
●Explain how soil is formed from combinations of weathered rock and decomposed plant and animal remains, and that it contains living organisms.
●Identify the components of soil and other factors, such as bacteria, fungi and worms, that influence its texture, fertility, and resistance to erosion;
●Describe the properties of soil, such as color, texture, capacity to retain water, and its ability to support plant life;
●Explain how some changes to the Earth’s surface happen abruptly, as a result of landslides, - earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, while other changes, happen very
slowly as a result of weathering, erosions and deposition of sediment caused by waves, wind, water and ice;
●Explain that most microorganisms do not cause disease and that many are beneficial to the environment.
●Recognize that an agricultural system is designed to maximize the use of all the elements in the system, including using plants for food, oxygen, for the filtration of air
and water, and for making compost.
●Identify and describe some of the processes and systems used to grow food, including irrigation,
●Use results from an experiment to draw conclusions about how water interacts with earth materials (e.g., percolation, erosion, frost heaves).
●The Earth and Earth materials, as we know them today, have developed over long periods of time, through constant change processes.
●Describe soils in terms of their physical properties.
●Describe the properties of soil, such as color, texture, capacity to retain water, and its ability to support plant life.
●Use a variety of tools and formats (oral presentations, journals, and multimedia presentations) to summarize and communicate the results of observations.
●Organize observations and data into tables, charts and graphs.
